🏁 Banzai Run Pinball Machine (Williams, 1988)
⭐ Why This Machine Matters
Banzai Run is one of the most iconic System 11 titles ever built—not because of its theme, but because of its dual playfield design, including a vertical backbox playfield that players actually shoot balls into and control. This was the first pinball machine designed by Pat Lawlor, who later created Addams Family, Twilight Zone, Whirlwind, and FunHouse.
Only ~1,750 units were produced, making it a legitimately scarce collector piece.
🏍️ Theme & Gameplay
- Motocross racing theme with a competitive, climb‑the‑hill feel.
- The machine’s signature feature is the vertical backbox playfield, where the ball is magnetically elevated and then controlled with a second set of flippers.
- The design was so expensive and complex that the concept was never used again.
- Shots on the vertical field had to be short—Lawlor tested this by standing a Space Shuttle machine on end and measuring ball travel distance.
